| Abstract: | Community Development and the Imperative of Food Security in selected communities in Ebonyi State was studied. Multistage sampling technique was employed to select 180 respondents from 88 communities from 6 L.G.As in Ebonyi State ensuring that two LGAs were selected from each of the three geographical zones of the state such that rural, semiurban and urban LGAs were selected for the study. The cardinal objectives of the study were to investigate the link between food security and community development; establish the challenges to food security; examine government efforts on food security; and, advance some policy options on food security in the study area. Descriptive and inferential statistical tools where used for data analysis while OLS simple regressive was employed for hypothesis testing. Findings reveal that there is a significant positive correlation between food security and community development and that government policies / programmes on food security are constrained by such factors as inadequate credit facilities to the farmers, lack of storage facilities and pastoralist/farmers' conflicts amongst others. The study therefore recommends, strengthening policies and programmes that can sufficiently address rural poverty; frontally tackle insecurity issues particularly crop farmers-herders conflicts as well as embarking on aggressive irrigation system to enable all seasons farming in the state. |
