Abstract: | Domestic slavery is said to have started in Igboland around the 15 century and continued up th to the 20 century, following the intrusion of European merchants in Nigeria. African historians, who have made excursions to investigate the activities of slave trade that took place in Igboland, have done so without necessarily capturing Ikwo as an area in which domestic slavery occurred. More so, scholars such as A. E. Afigbo, K.O. Dike and Elizabeth Isichei have once, presented the Aro and Ohaofia slave merchants as the most proficient in Igboland, while in some other times, failed to capture Ukwa Nkpuda Onwe Egvu in Echara Mkpoke Kingdom as a successful slave dealer of that era. This shows that apart from the activities of Odozi Obodo Society and the Ekeimoha market Ezza in the old Abakaliki of Ogoja province, there is no other mention of any place in Abakaliki where slave business could be said to have taken place. This study is a refutation of such assumption. It argues that slave business did occur in Ikwo at the same time it occurred in other parts of Igboland. It found that Ukwa Nkpuda of Onwe Egvu dynasty was a slave merchant who used to buy slaves and sell to the Aros. It concludes that his name is rarely mentioned because of how neglected the area is in terms of historical records. Data for the study would be derived from both oral and secondary sources while thematic and historical analytical methodology are adopted to situate this negligence. |
