Abstract: | The study examined the influence of Television Reality Show on the Behaviour of Youths in Lagos State (A Study of Big Brother Naija). The cultivation theory was adopted for the study. The research method was survey; the research instrument was the questionnaire while the sample size was four hundred (400). With the simple random sampling technique, one hundred copies of questionnaire were each distributed to youths in Mushin, Ikeja, Badagry and Ibeju-Lekki areas of Lagos State. Findings from the study showed that Big Brother Naija television reality show had a high viewership by youths in Lagos State as 47.3% of the respondents agreed they watched Big brother Naija television show every day of the week. Also, 27.2% of the respondents who are the majority said entertainment was the major reason they watched Big Brother Naija television show; the major impact or value according of Big Brother Naija on youths in Lagos State according to 52.1% of the respondents was entertainment and majority (43.3%) of the respondents opined that the programme managers of Big Brother Naija should ensure there is no sexual frolicking happens in the show in order to make the programme better enhance the behaviour of youths in Lagos State. From the findings, it was concluded that Lagos State youths are much familiar with the Big Brother Naija television reality show and this is evident via their access to cable television as well as statistics and knowledge about the programme. However, the influence of the programme on youths was more negative than positive. The study recommended that the Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria, as well as the National Film and Video Censor's Board should ensure strict rules and regulations on the contents that are portrayed on Big Brother Naija; caregivers, parents and guardians should endeavour to control or minimize the access to television reality shows of their children especially the ones who easily accept and practice the contents of the reality shows they are exposed to. |
