Abstract: The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) hitherto known as the Public Relations Association of Nigeria (until it was renamed in 1972) was established in 1963. The body attended the status of a Chartered Institute in June 1990 through Decree No. 16 (now an Act of the Federal Republic of Nigeria). By virtue of this law, NIPR reserves the power to register members, regulate the practice by monitoring the professional conducts of the members through an established Code of Ethics. NIPR has Chapters in every state of the Federation. This work therefore, critically assesses the performance of NIPR, Ebonyi State Chapter and how well NIPR objectives and philosophy are being achieved by the Chapter through various programmes. Survey research method was adopted for the study and the theory applied was the stakeholder theory. Questionnaire and interview were used to gather data from respondents. 120 copies of questionnaire were distributed but only 112 copies were returned which was used in analyzing the data. The findings show that the level of performance of NIPR in Ebonyi State is still very low. Many of the respondents see PR as incentives given to people for a reward in return, while few out of the respondent know about NIPR but cannot say much about its activities. The study recommends among other things that there should be partnership between NIPR and Ebonyi State government, Department of Mass communication or related disciplines in the higher institution within Ebonyi State to boost the image of the institute. We equally recommended that Ebonyi State Chapter of NIPR should start publishing journals and magazine to help publicize its activities.
