Abstract: | The ugly menace of high rate of youth unemployment with its attendant consequences, which have manifested in armed robbery, youth restiveness, rape, terrorism, kidnapping, and drug abuse, among others is a course for concern as this has hindered socio-economic development in Nigeria. This study became imperative to develop the vision, mission and strategies for achieving the goals of the Proposed National Entrepreneurship Development Institute (NEDI), in Nigeria. The researcher adopted content analytical technique to review relevant literature. Human Capital Development Theory propounded by Schult (1971) was adopted as the theoretical framework of analysis. It was observed that successive governments approach towards youth empowerment and unemployment in Nigeria was not sustainable as efforts were devoted to providing stipends as palliative measures. This has failed to be a sustainable means of livelihood for the unemployed. The researchers among other things recommend that governments youth empowerment schemes should focus more on education, training and acquisition of relevant skills as sustainable means to curb the menace of unemployment rather than grants and stipends. This can be achieved through the proposed National Entrepreneurship Institute. |
