| Abstract: | Nation-building is about building the institutions and values which sustain the collective community involving the use of propaganda or major infrastructure development to foster social harmony and economic growth through the provision of conducive environment for people to realise their ambitions within the rules and regulations guiding the entity and creating employment opportunities for the general populace, supporting the phrase; “responsible government and citizens are key to nation-building.” In a situation where the state fails to create such an atmosphere for the general populace, especially the youths to meet their expectations, due to high rate of corruption ineficiency, leading to unemployment in the state which often results in the citizens seeking alternative means of livelihood, sometimes against the societal norms, there arose social tensions which triggers conlicts on a large scale that have the capacity to destabilise the polity. Regrettably, Nigerian citizens as a result of failed state and failed expectations have resorted to non-legal means to make a living and that put has the nation-building project of Nigeria in jeopardy. The paper examines the remote and immediate causes of youths' inability to meet their ambitions and social expectations on one hand; and the implications of these on Nigeria's effort at nation-building. Anchoring our analysis on the Failed Expectation and Alternative Choice theories, with data drawn from documentary sources, and the adoption of a qualitative descriptive method of analysis, indings amongst others revealed that the failure of the general populace, especially the youths to be gainfully employed so as to be able to meet their social expectations has given rise to social tensions and triggers violent conlicts that have threatened the nation-building effort of the Nigerian government. The paper recommends that the youths should prune their ambitions to what they can achieve within the atmosphere which the state can provide, and remained focused. Also, the state should create the atmosphere for her citizens to actualise their ambitions and social expectations. |
