Author(s): Njoku Ijeoma Uzo & Elem Stephen Nwanchor
Abstract: Social media messages have been used to influence development projects in Nigeria including road infrastructures. The purpose of the study was to examine the influence of social media messages on improving the state of road infrastructure in South East Nigeria. The study employed integrative literature review method. It was anchored on Development Media Theory. Three research questions were posed to guide the study: What are the views of scholars on the influence of social media on improving road infrastructure in South East Nigeria? What are the specific areas that social media reportage has helped to improve road infrastructure in South East Nigeria? What can be done to make social media reportage effective in enhancing improvement of rural road infrastructure in South East Nigeria. Findings indicate that scholars are of the view that social media messages help to draw government attention to the state of bad roads in South East Nigeria; governments have intervened in some aspects such as repair and construction of some roads in South East and the building of flyovers to reduce trafic congestions on South East roads. Based on these findings, the study recommended that the users of social media should intensify reports on the state of bad roads in South East Nigeria; active social media users and influencers should report the state of bad roads in South East Nigeria in every social media platform instead of concentrating their reports on Facebook, in order enhance wider reach and make greater impact in the minds of the state leaders and actors and the general public.
