| Abstract: | The social menace of indecent dressing among the undergraduate students of Nigerian universities, Ebonyi State Univeristy, Abakaliki inclusive, is not only getting to its peak but is becoming worrisome. It is now obvious that many staff of Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, particularly, some of the lecturers, are beginning to see it as a harsh sexual harassment on them. Incidentally, both male and female undergraduate students are found culpable of this embarrassing social vice. Consequently, this study set out to examine social media use and the upsurge in indecent dressing among the undergraduate students of Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. The main objectives of the study were to determine if social media use is contributing to the recent increase in cases of indecent dressing among EBSU undergraduate students and to identity the platform that mostly influences the students' dressing pattern. Descriptive survey was adopted and copies of questionnaire were used to generate the needed data. The result showed that majority of undergraduate students of Ebony State University, Abakaliki are social media users, and that they imitate and learn some of their recent dressing pattern from social media posts and contents, that Facebook, WhatsApp and Intagram are the platforms that influence their dressing pattern the most. Based on the findings, the study recommended that the management of EBSU, Abakaliki should establish a committee to coordinate and monitor the implementation of dress code in each department and faculty of the university, that students and parents/ guardians/ sponsors during admission should be made to write an undertaking on decent dressing and to accept the stipulated sanctions against indecent dressing in the university. |
