Author(s): | Larry E. Udu |
Abstract: | Women all over the world particularly in developing countries such as Nigeria, share a common feature of marginalization in all spheres of life. Despite that women constitute half of the national population and indeed play a critical role in sustainable development of a country, there are evidences that women are a historically oppressed and marginalized group. Indeed there have been advocacies and research on gender parity and many civil liberty organizations such as the Women in Nigeria Organization (WIN) that has risen to the challenge of women emancipation in the country, the outcome of such struggle has been marginal. This study explores the theoretical explanations of women position in the society which essentially bothers on patriarchy, socio-cultural factors and perceived gender roles. The position of the study is that, unless there is in place, gender-quota legislation, disbanding of societal obstacles arising from obnoxious beliefs that put women in perpetual subjugation; in addition to embarking on aggressive women empowerment programmes which should embody increased investments in female education, sustainable development of the country stands mortgaged. |
